emtacl12 – emerging technologies in academic libraries
International conference on emerging technologies in academic libraries 2012
1-3 October 2012, Trondheim, Norway
Call for papers
Emerging technologies and evolving user behaviour keeps changing the rules of the game for academic libraries. Emerging technologies include new ways of using existing technologies and totally new, disruptive technologies. Examples include:
Semantic web / linked open data
Social media
Augmented reality
Mobile technologies
Visualisation
etc
emtacl12 is an international conference for academic librarians, information professionals, academic staff, students, library system developers and suppliers, among others. The aim is to provide answers to the following questions: What can academic libraries do to address change? How can we adapt? Which technologies can/should/must we use/create? The conference is hosted by NTNU University Library, the Library of the Norwegian university of science and technology in Trondheim, Norway.
The programme committee invites original presentations and posters taking one or more of the following perspectives as a point of departure:
Linked open data and other semantic web applications in the library
New literacies
Supporting research
Organizational change within the library
Analysis of user behaviour and use of statistics
New services/old services in new clothes
Other relevant perspectives on emerging technologies
We invite submission of abstracts or posters presenting:
Theoretical solutions, but with a clear illustration on how these solutions can be applied in libraries
Opinions on some aspect of practice, or descriptions of work that is still in progress, but sufficiently mature to warrant attention
Experiences and case studies specifying requirements, challenges, or opportunities of applying emerging technologies in libraries
Comparisons with alternative or competing approaches using conventional technologies
Best practices for implementing emerging technologies in libraries
Assessments of cost and benefits from the application of emerging technologies, e.g. time and cost of implementation and deployment, integration with legacy IT systems, user acceptance, returns on investment
We will also open for live demos of emerging technologies, and invite submission of abstracts or videos describing such demos.
Abstract submission instructions:
Please use the submission form at
https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=emtacl12
to submit an abstract describing your contribution, including:
personal details
additional presenter details
presentation title and abstract.
Abstract length should not exceed 2500 characters. Please note that the language of the conference will be English, and therefore the committee will only accept submissions in this language.
All submitted abstracts will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers.
Contributions will be made public through the NTNU e-publishing service, and accepted authors will be invited to supply full papers for this purpose. Papers are primarily requested in pdf format, conforming to further formatting details at the submission website. We do however welcome suggestions for alternative formats in cases where pdf is unsuitable, e.g. for non-textual contributions.
Important dates:
Abstract submission: 15 April 2012
Notification of acceptance/rejection: 25 May 2012
Authors should confirm their participation: 8 June 2012
Conference dates: 1-3 October 2012

Have you ever need a internet browser to be launched inside Xbmcbuntu? Well Xbmcbuntu is launching directly into Xbmc without being in touch with the linux distro laying behind, how could you launch a browser? Well the answer is using the advanced launcher app inside Xbmc together with linuxportableapps self-executable bin files on a memory stick. Not all of the linuxportableapps is working but I have managed to get Firefox, Chromium and Opera to work on Xbmc Eden beta 2.

Problems finding your way to the right location at NTNU Gløshaugen campus?
Well than maybe the CampusGuide is the answer?
The plan is that the rest of NTNU campus will be covered in 2012.
You will find it on dewey number 394.12 in the shelf's at NTNU Dragvoll Library, Trondheim, Norway.
For those of you experiencing problems when loading the module icons, here is the answer:
I experienced some problems with the module icons in BartsideeTV recently, they all had the same color, white without the previous Tv logo so I sent the question directly to Bart and got an answer back 6 minutes later solving my problem.
One of the best free music streaming services on the web is now available through the fantastic Bartsidee Repository, it's a ported version of the xbmc Grooveshark app. You already had a very simple Groooveshark interface avaiable through the Navi-x app, but this version has much more functionality and is what I will call a proper app.
Great work again Bart!
Add Boxee repo: boxee.bartsidee.nl
AMAZING YEEEAAAAAHHHH!!!
4 hours and 30 minutes ago I received upgrade v.1.1.1.19092 and everything is working again!!!!
Thank you Thank you.
Did the manual update v.1.1.0.19053 Now everything is terribly slow. No streams
are working proper (not working at all), so I suppose I just have to
play local files. This is crap! I want to go back to the previous
version. Not recommending anyone to upgrade.
After upgrading to v.1.1.0.19053 Boxee Box is just nothing but a average capable
browser and a local media player. Terribly disappointed about the new
upgrade, never should have upgraded. I also had a really hard time
getting the audio to work,it worked after deselecting everything under
the specified audio channels. THIS IS TOTAL CRAP! I liked my previous
Boxee Box version much better. The Boxee Box team really has to do
something about the awful streaming speed, no my Boxee Box is unuseable.
The new layout and functions is looking great but who cares when nothing
else is functioning, almost impossible to stream, no pictures, drop out
audio.
Have tried several different apps and repositories that used to function
great with the previous version, Navi-X, Bartsidee Repository
(Bartisidee TV), etc.
This is just terribly disappointing. I am now stuck with a Boxee Box
that's unusable, what is Boxee Box without streaming possibilities? A
local media player.
The official Boxee repository listing is terribly out of date, here comes a list of repositories with apps listing that I have installed myself, I am not sureall of the repositories is working:

The rumours is saying that the new update, version 1.5, for Boxee Box is giving some major updates and a complete facelift to the Boxee Browser, about time if you ask for my opinion. The small screen with a default Bing searchengine was crap. I am hoping for something more like the Kylo browser from Hillcrest Labs optimized for browsing on your TV screen. The rumours are saying very little about other updates, the update is expected to come at the end of March.
The best boxee repository and apps without any doubt is the Bartsidee Repository. The best app in this repository is BartsideeTV, including all of the other singles apps in the repository. It's a great looking interface and layout and it's very easy to use. The bartsideeTV consists of the following source modules:
- Hulu (not working on boxee box)
- BBC iPlayer (including hd and subtitle support)
- Dutch channels ( sbs, uzg, nl24, tmf)
- Youtube
- svtplay (Swedish)
- CBC (Canadian)
- Navi-x (No script support)
- Zdf and ARD (full mediathek + subtitles)
You could select individual modules and put together those you want most. You could search inside one module or search across several. The Navi-x module is actually functioning better than the original navi-x app.
Add the following to your "add repository" list: http://boxee.bartsidee.nl
Here are some screenshots:
I have just bought The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India, over a period from the middle ages to the late eighteenth century.
A few of you out there has probably become very frustrated about the bad default integrated web browser in the boxee box, not functioning at all, well here is a solution to your problems. The excellent Kylo tv browser is made just for the purpose of web browsing on your TV with your computer connected to your TV. Head over to the Kylo pages and download the exe file (just Windows support). If you are running Linux like myself it's no problem, first download the exe file to your desktop or a memory stick (if you are running boxee box without a computer attached to your TV).
Then you have to make sure you have the excellent launcher application from the excellent 3rd-party repository Fuzzthed, just add http://dir.fuzzthed.com to your repositories under applications.
Launch the launcher and add application in the left menu, pick the kylo.exe install file and pick a directory of your choice to install to, if you are running Boxee Box make sure it is installed to your memory stick. Then after installation remove the application you made for executing the kylo.exe install file and pick the kylo.exe self-executable, if you want an image to the launcher file pick the same path as the executable and write kylo.ico instead of kylo.exe. Now you have a fully funtional TV Browser. Enjoy!!

At the University of Florida you will find a nice collection of historical African photos in their digital photographs of Africa Collection.
"The Photographs of Africa Collection includes photographs of Africa from various research projects and photographers. Currently, this growing collection includes select photographs by cinematographer/photographer Martin Rikli (1898-1969) documenting his Ethiopian (Abessinien) expedition from 1935-36, which coincided with the second Italo-Abyssinian War."

You have several online services offering to store your bookmarks so that you could easily access them anywhere in the world as long as you have internet connection. Delicious is probably the most popular one, then you have Xmarks, soon to stop it's service 01.01.2011. One week ago I found the very easy to use and appealing Linkable, with a great look and easy access. Here is my links at linkable.com.

Once again I am addressing the ongoing conflict and problems of West Papua (take a look on other earlier blogpostings).
Taken from Sally Collisters webpage:"In December 2007 I returned to West Papua, documenting the stories of its indigenous people who have been living under a brutal Indonesian military occupation. Its tribal people are being slaughtered, and their unique environment destroyed. Due to technical problems, my photography was limited to this small set, taken at a village in the Baliem Valley.
For more information about the shocking situation in West Papua, or to donate to the Free West Papua Campaign please visit www.freewestpapua.org"

Regardless of the fact that Froyo 2.2 has included a function called Apps2SD it's quite a few apps that you are not able to move to your SD card because of the simple fact that the developers of the app didn't make this an option in the first place, if you are stuck on an older version of android it's not possible at all unless you have rooted your phone. Depending on your phones model the amount of internal memory storage is varying from model to model. If you have very little it's even more important to do something about the situation. One of the very best ways to free some internal memory is of course to not install a lot of applications, but if you are like me you love your applications so you will probably seek other options, the best one is to clear the cache of your applications. You could do that by going to settings and manage applications and clear cache or you could use a very good application like "Quick App Clean Cache". Some of the big cache eaters are especially the browsers like, Dolphin and Skyfire and The Android Market, but you also have other "hungry" applications eating away on your memory. Leaving the job over to a professional cache freeing app is probably the best method.
Give your android some more memory by freeing some cache!
dmoz open directory project has been mentioned on this blog before but that's probably 3-4 years ago. Since than a lot has happened. Trying to search topics like: geography under the heading science/social sciences gave 1048 links. When trying the same with anthropology under the heading science/social sciences it gave 824 links, considerably more than a few years ago.
A simple search with the broad keyword "Africa" inside ebooks only gave a nice search results list containing 2,297 hits .
2,174 hits are in the category Accessible books and 153 hits in the category protected DAISY, meaning not open readable. You will find quite some interesting titles on the list.
Give openlibrary.org a try yourself!
The Grazr service is dead. Grazr was a free RSS to widget converter that allowded you to create cool custom widgets for any RSS, RDF, ATOM or OPML feed. For all of us having used their services is their other services that could be used?

Here are some examples of Widgets made by the Optimal Browser, the opml has been made and exported from the ticTocs service (RSS/OPML Journal Tables of Contents Service):

A very interesting project is taking place 4,756 metres above sea level in the Peruvian Andes. Inventor Eduardo Gold is planning to splash whitewash onto loose rocks and paint a total area of 70 hectares (173 acres) on three peaks in the Andean region of Ayacucho in southern Peru. "A white surface reflects the sun's rays back through the atmosphere and into space, in doing so it cools the area around it too," explains Gold.
"In effect in creates a micro-climate, so we can say that the cold generates more cold, just as heat generates more heat."
In that way he wants to recuperate the country's melting glaciers.

SlideIT keyboard from Dasur is really excellent. Such a easy way to express yourself, not writing but sliding your words, search terms, url's etc.....SlideIT is available for Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android and iPhone.
Give it a try. A wonderful experience saving you a lot of time. I will never go back to any ordinary keyboard again on my android phone.
It's really not a problem when you have android file repositories like 4share or blackdroid allowing you to download apk files directly to your phone or PC, both free and paid apps. The only disadvantage is that you don't have the possibility to update the paid apps the way you update the free apps from the android market. Well it's not a big problem, you just visit those repositories regularly and install a newer version if it's available.
On their "development" page you could for instance find 3 different bussoracles developed for Android and iPhone, telling you when the bus is departing and arriving in the Trondheim region, you could also find a timetable generator for NTNU students.
Have you ever wanted to share your android apps (.apk files) with friends? If you use the app called OnTheFly Backup you could safely backup your apps to the SD card or backup to your PC.Share all those lovely apps is just a question of seconds, the easiest way is just to make a zipped archive and share as a single file, you have several zip readers for android able to read zipped archives.
Good luck.....

Skyfire Launches the First Flash Video Enabled Mobile Browser for Android. It's actually working quite well to watch flash videos through the Skyfire browser. The browser could be downloaded here. The only other way to get flash on your android is to sign up for Adobe Flash Player 10.1 Beta and wait, according to Adobe this will happen sometime in may this year.
I have recently followed to many on Twitter. I decided to remove multiple users. Luckily I came across a very nice Greasemonkey script allowing me to remove followers not following me in a very easy way. Take a look yourself.

A very good and handy app, AppBrain Market Sync, is making it possible to install Android apps from a web interface. Sign in with your Google account and start browsing new apps, delete old ones or sync your apps.

Today I came across a very nice and handy add-on for Firefox called WikiLook
A very fast way to define words in any webpage. Just press Ctrl or Shift or Alt and make a RightMouseButton click on a word.
Defaults: Shift+right-click is a Wiktionary lookup, Ctrl+right-click is a Wikipedia lookup, Alt+right-click is Uncyclopedia lookup.
After getting a question yesterday about SyncML calendar sync and android phones I conducted a small scale research to try to come up with a good answer. I finally found out that the swiss company Synthesis has released a beta version of their SyncML client as a android app. The *.apk file you could download if you are willing to register (free) and login as a registred user.
I had some trouble in the beginning setting up the Version 1709 (Android Client Beta 1709). I mailed:
Beat FORSTER
Dipl. El. Ing. ETH
Dipl. NDS ETHZ in Betriebswissenschaften
Managing Partner
beat.forster@synthesis.ch
I got a very quick and kind answer back (actually in 30 minutes), but in the meantime I had found the solution to my problems, it was not caused by the app, but the actual default settings in my cupcake v.1.5 for android. I had to turn off the active sync for my Google calendar, otherwise it was actually syncing twice, first against my oracle based calendar, full of calendar data and secondly against my Google calendar that was empty. So the reason why I in the beginning always was ending up with a empty calendar was simply that it finally was syncing against my empty Google calendar, but by turning off the active sync I at last got my oracle calendar data.
No I am very pleased with the Synthesis app. Give it a try! http://www.synthesis.ch
The app is functioning on every phone running android v.1.5 and above.
This is how is looks on my HTC magic with android v.1.5:
A real pain in the "ass" fact for those of us still stuck with android cupcake 1.5 on our HTC magic is that we are not able to connect to WPA2 Enterprise encrypted WIFI networks, meaning a big disappointment taken into consideration that a lot of university campuses around the world is using Eduroam, fully relying on WPA2 Enterprise encryption. You will find a lot of user manuals around on the web giving you the solution by altering your phones WIFI settings, but firstly you have to root the phone (no real option for me). I would deeply appreciate any feedback on a easy solution for cupcake android. I saw one solution but than you have to boot and download two recovery roms and even temper with the wpa_supplicant conf file, no option either.
A "real" cry for help....
ReadWriteWeb posted a interesting article today about some of the new features that YouTube plan to launch when redesigning.
* New playlist design, which shows all of your queued videos above the video your watching.
* Queuing from search capability, which allows you to add videos to your queue when you search from the video page.
* The comments section will now list both text and video, so that video updates become a bigger and more integrated part of the discussion.
A Google map especially made for the emtacl10 conference. Here you could find placemarks for bars, restaurants, sightseeing destinations, the conference hotel etc. For those of you attending the conference be kind to leave comments if you like to add other placemarks to the map or have general questions about destinations in Trondheim.

PlayOnLinux is a piece of sofware which allows you to easily install and use numerous games and softwares designed to run with Microsoft®'s Windows®.
Few games are compatible with GNU/Linux at the moment and it certainly is a factor preventing the migration to this system. PlayOnLinux brings an accessible and efficient solution to this problem, cost-free and rescpetful of the free softwares.
What are PlayOnLinux's features?
Here is a non-exhaustive list of the interesting points to know:
* You don't have to own a Windows® license to use PlayOnLinux.
* PlayOnLinux is based on Wine, and so profits from all its possibilities yet it keeps the user away from its complexity while exploiting some of its advanced functions.
* PlayOnLinux is a free software.
* PlayOnLinux uses Bash and Python

Berkeley university of California anthropology courses.
A series of University of Oxford anthropology lectures organised by Linacre College.
Based on the book by Jared Diamond "Guns Germs and Steel" by National Geographic.
"Jared Diamond’s journey of discovery began on the island of Papua New Guinea. There, in 1974, a local named Yali asked Diamond a deceptively simple question: “Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo, but we black people had little cargo of our own?”
For those of use using another operating system than Windows, or not having iTunes, it's a real pain in the a**, not being able to follow courses that more and more universities prefer to publish on iTunes U. The solution is emulation,by emulating the iTunes client we fool the system.
Better explained on the TechnoBabel site.
The solution
Emulating the iTunes client: the script can be tested at
http://www2.unil.ch/itunesu/index.groovy?handle=[itunesU url]
It only needs the url which would open in iTunes and converts it to a displayable webpage.
For example for mit.edu: http://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browsev2/mit.edu
http://www2.unil.ch/itunesu/index.groovy?handle=http://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browsev2/mit.edu
Let's try it on a couple of NTNU podcasts:
http://www2.unil.ch/itunesu/index.groovy?handle=http://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browse/ntnu.no
Strange it don't seem to work on NTNU iTunes U podcasts but on all other major international universities using iTunes U. Should I be surprised?
Well give it a try on MIT and Standford and you will see that it works.
local iTunes U urls:
MIT
http://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browse/mit.edu
Standford
http://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browsev2/itunes.stanford.edu
iTunes U bookmarklet, just fill in your local iTunes U url and you get access to iTunes U content.
Let's hope Google soon realize that they have to offer the possibility to run and save applications from your SD card. For those of use loving applications the internal memory storage is far too limited. Running big programs will be impossible on the android unless you open the possibility to save and run applications from your SD card.
I have read/followed threads from numerous forums and the only solution to the problem at the present stage is to root your phone, but I don't want to do that.
If rooting my phone it will definitely be a high security risk.
ReadWriteWeb is in a new series called "Mobile Web Meets Internet of Things" focusing on how the biggest trends tracked last year, Mobile Web and Internet of Things are converging, the first focus is on barcode scanning.
"According to a new report from Cambridge University (PDF), students aren't interested in being able to read eBooks and eJournals on their mobile phones. Instead, users are far more interested in opening hours, location maps, contact info, and access to the library catalog".

Jolicloud is a new operating system for netbooks.I installed it on my ASUS EEE PC 900 yesterday. You could either download jolicloud-usb-creator-installer or use the good "old" unetbootin to create a bootable usb memory stick. I used unetbootin and the whole OS was up and running in just 15 minutes. The speed is the fastest I have experienced so far with my EEE PC 900, and I also like the one-click install from the jolicloud application directory. The look is also great. For those of you wanting the iso to install to do the above mentioned install here it is.
It's no excuse not to install this OS. It's simply great. (I am not paid to say this).
Compatible devices
PandaHome is by far the best home replacement app for Android. Having several options to tweak settings, either by going to the Theme settings options from the menu button, or by long pressing on the screen and choose Home Assistant, or by installing the widget PandaHome Toogle.
You could change font size and color, background color, wallpapers, Multi-screen, Themes, Drawer settings, Dockbar settings, picking automatic randomized themes, etc.
Google just released the Google Googles application for Android, it's available through the android market. Sadly it's only available to customers that have firmware 1.6 (Donut) or 2.0.
"Google Goggles is a visual search app. Instead of using words, take a picture of an object with your camera phone: we attempt to recognize the object, and return relevant search results. Goggles also provides information about businesses near you by displaying their names directly in the camera preview".

A nice new alternative to Android market has recently seen the daylight, it's called Open Home.
After updating the Pandahome homescreen replacement the getjar market app has been acting mighty strange, mostly not working.
Google Sites added some new features: integration with Picasa Web Albums, feeds, custom templates.
The Android J2ME MIDP RUNNER let you convert, run and install J2me applications on your Android phone. I have tried it and I am pleased to announce that it's functioning. I tried the J2me application Snaptu and it really run smooth.
