International conference on emerging technologies in academic libraries 2012

1-3 October 2012, Trondheim, Norway

Call for papers

Emerging technologies and evolving user behaviour keeps changing the rules of the game for academic libraries. Emerging technologies include new ways of using existing technologies and totally new, disruptive technologies. Examples include:

Semantic web / linked open data
Social media
Augmented reality
Mobile technologies
Visualisation
etc

emtacl12 is an international conference for academic librarians, information professionals, academic staff, students, library system developers and suppliers, among others. The aim is to provide answers to the following questions: What can academic libraries do to address change? How can we adapt? Which technologies can/should/must we use/create? The conference is hosted by NTNU University Library, the Library of the Norwegian university of science and technology in Trondheim, Norway.

The programme committee invites original presentations and posters taking one or more of the following perspectives as a point of departure:

Linked open data and other semantic web applications in the library
New literacies
Supporting research
Organizational change within the library
Analysis of user behaviour and use of statistics
New services/old services in new clothes
Other relevant perspectives on emerging technologies

We invite submission of abstracts or posters presenting:

Theoretical solutions, but with a clear illustration on how these solutions can be applied in libraries
Opinions on some aspect of practice, or descriptions of work that is still in progress, but sufficiently mature to warrant attention
Experiences and case studies specifying requirements, challenges, or opportunities of applying emerging technologies in libraries
Comparisons with alternative or competing approaches using conventional technologies
Best practices for implementing emerging technologies in libraries
Assessments of cost and benefits from the application of emerging technologies, e.g. time and cost of implementation and deployment, integration with legacy IT systems, user acceptance, returns on investment

We will also open for live demos of emerging technologies, and invite submission of abstracts or videos describing such demos.

Abstract length should not exceed 2500 characters. Please note that the language of the conference will be English, and therefore the committee will only accept submissions in this language.

All submitted abstracts will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers.

Contributions will be made public through the NTNU e-publishing service, and accepted authors will be invited to supply full papers for this purpose. Papers are primarily requested in pdf format, conforming to further formatting details at the submission website. We do however welcome suggestions for alternative formats in cases where pdf is unsuitable, e.g. for non-textual contributions.

Notification of acceptance/rejection: 25 May 2012

Xbmcbuntu and launching internet browsers

Have you ever need a internet browser to be launched inside Xbmcbuntu? Well Xbmcbuntu is launching directly into Xbmc without being in touch with the linux distro laying behind, how could you launch a browser? Well the answer is using the advanced launcher app inside Xbmc together with linuxportableapps self-executable bin files on a memory stick. Not all of the linuxportableapps is working but I have managed to get Firefox, Chromium and Opera to work on Xbmc Eden beta 2.

BartsideeTv in the Bartsidee Repository-Boxee

For those of you experiencing problems when loading the module icons, here is the answer:

I experienced some problems with the module icons in BartsideeTV recently, they all had the same color,white without the previous Tv logo so I sent the question directly to Bart and got an answer back 6 minutes later solving my problem.

Grooveshark on Boxee

One of the best free music streaming services on the web is now available through the fantastic Bartsidee Repository, it's a ported version of the xbmc Grooveshark app. You already had a very simple Groooveshark interface avaiable through the Navi-x app, but this version has much more functionality and is what I will call a proper app.

Boxee Box update follow-up

AMAZING YEEEAAAAAHHHH!!!

4 hours and 30 minutes ago I received upgrade v.1.1.1.19092 and everything is working again!!!!

Boxee Box don't update to latest firmware

Did the manual update v.1.1.0.19053 Now everything is terribly slow. No streams
are working proper (not working at all), so I suppose I just have to
play local files. This is crap! I want to go back to the previous
version. Not recommending anyone to upgrade.

After upgrading to v.1.1.0.19053 Boxee Box is just nothing but a average capable
browser and a local media player. Terribly disappointed about the new
upgrade, never should have upgraded. I also had a really hard time
getting the audio to work,it worked after deselecting everything under
the specified audio channels. THIS IS TOTAL CRAP! I liked my previous
Boxee Box version much better. The Boxee Box team really has to do
something about the awful streaming speed, no my Boxee Box is unuseable.

The new layout and functions is looking great but who cares when nothing
else is functioning, almost impossible to stream, no pictures, drop out
audio.

Have tried several different apps and repositories that used to function
great with the previous version, Navi-X, Bartsidee Repository
(Bartisidee TV), etc.

This is just terribly disappointing. I am now stuck with a Boxee Box
that's unusable, what is Boxee Box without streaming possibilities? A
local media player.

Boxee update

The rumours is saying that the new update, version 1.5, for Boxee Box is giving some major updates and a complete facelift to the Boxee Browser, about time if you ask for my opinion. The small screen with a default Bing searchengine was crap. I am hoping for something more like the Kylo browser from Hillcrest Labs optimized for browsing on your TV screen. The rumours are saying very little about other updates, the update is expected to come at the end of March.

Bartsidee Repository

The best boxee repository and apps without any doubt is the Bartsidee Repository. The best app in this repository is BartsideeTV, including all of the other singles apps in the repository. It's a great looking interface and layout and it's very easy to use. The bartsideeTV consists of the following source modules:

- Hulu (not working on boxee box)
- BBC iPlayer (including hd and subtitle support)
- Dutch channels ( sbs, uzg, nl24, tmf)
- Youtube
- svtplay (Swedish)
- CBC (Canadian)
- Navi-x (No script support)
- Zdf and ARD (full mediathek + subtitles)

You could select individual modules and put together those you want most. You could search inside one module or search across several. The Navi-x module is actually functioning better than the original navi-x app.

Hakluyt Society First Series

I have just bought The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India, over a period from the middle ages to the late eighteenth century.
