Iphone/Ipod Touch Webapps
Here is a small collection of webapps presented in a Grazr widget layout optimized for Iphone. The opml reading list is a collection of webapps that I have found useful. The list have no direct links to bookmarklets due to the fact that if you want a functional reading list you have to include the "http:// tag", a tag not included in javascript bookmarklets, but I have links to collection of bookmarklets presented on webpages.

Bookmarklets and Ipod Touch/Iphone
Safari bookmarklets could make your information retrieval a lot easier when using Ipod Touch or Iphone. A bookmarklet is an applet, a small computer application, stored as the URL of a bookmark in a web browser or as a hyperlink on a web page. The term is a portmanteau of the terms bookmark and applet.
Whether bookmarklet utilities are stored as bookmarks or hyperlinks, they are designed to add one-click functionality to a browser or web page. When clicked, a bookmarklet performs some function, one of a wide variety such as a search query or data extraction. Usually the applet is a JavaScript program.

Web browsing on your mobile phone
I am really waiting for Firefox to make a web browsing solution for the Symbian OS on mobile phones, with their Minimo project they seem to only aim the Windows Mobile market. Why? Her is a list of compatible devices so far. You already have Miniopera for mobile phones, but it gives you far from a pleasant browsing experience, but that's probably because his big brother is not much better.

Google Docs in Firefox Sidebar
Google Docs Bar is a Firefox extension that shows the list of documents from Google Docs in the sidebar. The extension has many features from Google's file explorer: you can search for a file, restrict the list to documents,spreadsheets or presentations and view a certain folder (the subfolders aren't yet supported).A great feature that makes this extension more valuable is uploading files using drag and drop. Drag one or more files from Windows Explorer to the sidebar and they'll be uploaded in the background. For those who are worried about security, the extension sends your credentials directly to Google and stores them in Firefox's password manager. After installing the extension, you can make the sidebar visible by going to View > Sidebar > Google Docs Bar. The sidebar will always show the list of documents and it's useful if you frequently use Google Docs.

The people are experiencing torture and genocide by the indonesians who only are "milking" the area for its resources, but also other countries have interests in the rich western papuan natural resources, and that's probably why nobody is reacting to the violation of basic human rights. RDM+: Remote desktop for Iphone/Ipod Touch
I am sure that a lot of employees are frustrated about several restrictions to install and use new appllication on their computers at work, very far from the realities you experience with your home computer. Here is a solution to work and manage your home computer on your mobile device and for instance send the solutions/finished products/files by mail to your computer at work. Very often maybe the only solution because its usually necessary to install a client in both ends when working with remote desktops. RDM Desktop is still a very slow service and the free version is only limited to 3 minutes use, but its only a beta version so the future will show...
Grazr-Reading list management and tools
I have mentioned the Grazr widget in earlier postings on this blog and I have been using the widget active quite some time on this blog as you could see in the right column of this blog. Grazr is not only offering single RSS feeds options but also OPML-based dynamically shareable feed lists. As one of the few widgets services they have the possibility to export to Iphone and Ipod Touch and believe me its looking great on my Ipod Touch. This is a step into our mobile future.
With the introduction of Iphone & Ipod Touch mobile web browsing has become more than just three or four lines of text on your mobile device, a whole industry is trying to develop solutions to make mobile web browsing a pleasant experience. Widgets on your personal homepage, blog or on your desktop is old news, but customized widget for the mobile is something new. The Widgetop service is delivering a customizable web desktop solution for your mobile device that's functioning. It's also possible to make your own widgets under the developer platform.
A great idea for christmas. Combine Google Maps and a year calendar and create wall calendars from different locations on earth.

Workshop on blogging (blogger.com), Google account & Google Talk
As a part of the IT strategy for NTNU library, facing the future, we had our 2nd workshop Friday the 23th of November held at Dragvoll Library. It was a workshop showing library employees how to make a simple blog and how to use instant messaging (Google Talk) in order to communicate in a more efficient way than with regular mail. This is just one of several workshops planned to increase the level of IT knowledge among our employees. The tools picked for this particular workshop was just examples of how you can use tools, for the simplicity we picked all the tools from Google, but they are not necessarily those we decide to use in the future.
I made a widget for the occasion with some of the same links as those you find in my previously made widget in the right column of this blog in addition to some links used in our presentation at the workshop.
A very handy and cool new customizable approach to sharing favourite RSS feeds, Webpages and Widgets. You just have to try this. This is the most flexible solution I have seen in a very long time. Here is my contribution to sharing.

Webwag Toolbar in Firefox
The Webwag account interface is much like Pageflakes when it comes to being a collection of favourite RSS feeds, but it has some very cool features when it comes to the widgets. Here you could make a widget on demand inside your webwag's pages or just create a widget on demand from the top toolbar in Firefox and export it to your Webwag pages. A wonderful feature! You could put whole webpages into one widget. The Webwag Toolbar you could download here.

It's working wonderful in Firefox,Opera and Safari and of course not in Explorer, why should everything be so problematic with Explorer? Another big issue with the Exporer browser is the constant worrying about Sidebar drop down if your widgets or anything else is challenging the sidebar width.

Hello,
My blog has experienced a major facelift as you could all see. All e-resources that before had their own widget + pulldown menu has been collected into one widget containing several opml files. It's possible to download the opml files in the widget by clicking the right mouse button and pick the "save as" option. Most of the opml files are just plain collections of links, only one link "Collected Library Rss link", is a collection of RSS feeds.

Grazr & BlogBridge 6.0
The worst thing about a blog is definetly a inactive blog. I am sorry folks, being sick for more than a week is not helping frequent posting. You could all see that I have tried to clean up the right column of my blog since last time. I have removed some of my pull down menus extracted the links and made opml files, then I have imported the opml files into the Grazr widget a whoolaa. The meaning behind it is that everybody could choose to export the links to their own system, IGoogle, Pageflakes,etc...Meaning that it all has become more flexible.

I came across this RSS feed reader not long ago, a very good reader with lots of options, one of them being to import and export opml files, in that way your whole collection of good RSS feeds could be shared with the rest of the world, like I have done under the link "COLLECTED LIBRARY BLOG RSS FEEDS".

OPEN ACCESS/REPOSITORIES
A growing number of publications is now being presented in open access archives for free. This is the obvious way to go into the future, away from the tyranny of big publishers pricing their "offerings" to an insane price.
Especially poor countries and countries having research done in other languages than those reaching the list of high impact factor journals build their own networks , not letting the publishing industry decide what is good or bad research.
Through the open archives you could reach more people, shouldn't that be the main goal for all research done, not letting the information only be available for one small exclusive group?

VU-DARE
VU-DARE is the Digital Academic Repository (DARE) of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

The Internet Archive # Open-Access Text Archive
The Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded to build an Internet library, with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format. Founded in 1996 and located in the Presidio of San Francisco, the Archive has been receiving data donations from Alexa Internet and others. In late 1999, the organization started to grow to include more well-rounded collections. Now the Internet Archive includes texts, audio, moving images, and software as well as archived web pages in our collections.

Free fulltext database of digital theses.
"The aim of the ADT program is to establish a distributed database of digital versions of theses produced by the postgraduate research students at Australian universities. Hopefully Burma's military junta will soon surrender to the demands of ordinary burmanese people and the countries munks. For the last decade and a half the junta have stood for a hardline politics prompting economic stagnation and international condemnation.
I ENCOURAGE EVERY LIBRARIAN AROUND THE WORLD TO TAKE PART IN A SILENT ACTION AGAINST THE BRUTAL MILITARY JUNTA IN BURMA.
PRINT OUT A RED A4 PAPER WITH THE TEXT FREE BURMA AND HANG IT OUTSIDE YOUR OFFICE DOOR.

Rift Valley Institute
The Rift Valley Institute is an independent research and educational
association based in Kenya and the United Kingdom. It has been working
in Eastern Africa, including Sudan and the Horn, since 2001. More background information could be found here.
For those of you interested in Sudan research a very nice feature on the institutes website is the Sudan Open Archive, with free research material.

Masai Women

Another film is added to our collection of anthropological film, this time it's a film from the highly acclaimed Disappearing World series from Granada Television.
The Masai are animal herders in the East African Rift Valley of Kenya and Tanzania.
The DVD is divided into different scenes:
1. Play the whole program
2. Masai concept of wealth
3. Elders and warriors
4. Female circumcision ceremony
5. A new bride
6. Threats and insults
7. Meeting the in-laws
8. Begging for cows
9. Husbands and lovers

Anthropologist John Ryle is following in the footsteps of Evans-Pritchard and his classic book: Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic among the Azande. Much has changed since the original fieldwork carried out between 1926-1930 by Evans-Pritchard, Zande is not a static society anymore.

Ceedo Personal
#Programs run from any portable storage

Several has probably experienced the annoying fact that you don't have any user administration priviliges on your computer. Well here is a small victory, from the Ceedo site you could install software packages onto your portable storage and run them together with the rest of your preinstalled programs. You could enjoy programs that you didn't have the possibility to download before, but I have to add that the available software available from the creedo site still is limited but would hopefully grow in the future.
Any trace of your activities from the creedo software programs started from portable storage is gone when you choose to eject your portable device.

Another possiblity is to use the U3 smart drive, another similar solution run from a portable storage device, but it has to be a U3 smart drive. The available software titles for the U3 smartdrive is probably slightly more than for the Ceedo solution, but the Ceedo solution don't set any limit to what kind of portable device you choose to install the software onto. The U3 software is preinstalled onto the U3 smart drive,unlike the Ceedo solution where you have to install the software yourself.
Requirements for using the U3 technology is Windows 2000 SP4 / XP or higher, not yet supporting any other operating system.

Anthropological Film
Dragvoll library, NTNU, Norway had no antropological films in our collection until recently, I have now bought several DVDs, they are all located together with the rest of our DVD collection.
Here are some samples:

Scenes of daily life in the village of Sayaga, a small farming village in southwest Burkina Faso. Filmed in 2002 by Christopher D.Roy *, Professor of African art at the University of Iowa.
It's possible to lend the films for 14 days.
Online open source free spreadsheet with functionalities that makes it possible for instance to display the spreadsheet data on a Google Map or Google Earth.

Coursework, teaching, lessons,information... English website with several useful links and also a couple of blogs (not very updated I might add...). Probably most information for new students, some useful background information and could be used for refreshing old "knowledge".

Search engines on the web don't need to be only text oriented, we have search engines combining visual display and text results like for instance Kart00.
